Actually, to keep it simple, you really don't need halyards with the new technology. Sailing is very simple these days. Check the archives, there is a lot of good information there... heh heh.

Most use wire ie paper clips. I use small zip ties. They are strong and flexible.

Have just replaced all the halyards on my 310, by roughly sewing them with sail twine and making sure that the ends ‘abutt’ to ensure a smooth sliding over the sheaves. Aligning the 2 ends can be assisted by wrapping a thin tape over the junction. I also smeared some teflon grease over it. Had only one scary moment where I had to back off and re-tape/grease.

Butt the 2 ends together and start stitching with some heavy thread. On a C-30 a big glump of stuff will not go through, there is very little clearance. Do not use the tape method, it won't work and you will end up going up the mast. Been there, done that.

We store our CAT30 outdoors in the cold chicago winters so we take our halyards down every fall. We learned a trick from a guy at our yard using masons twine to do the job. At the loose end of the halyard loop about 5 half hitches of the mason twine around your line, about an inch apart. Place a small piece of tape around each one to hold in place. Pull the halyard through and this leaves the mason twine in your mast to absorb the winter freeze. In the spring (next weekend for us) we'll repeat the process and haul the halyards back up through the mast. Similar to previous post, we also smear the butt end of the halyard with some teflon grease to make it easier. It may be an extra step for you to go from old halyard to twine to new halyard, but we spent many an hour trying to thread directly from old halyard to new with no luck. There seems to be very little clearance at the top of the mast. Hope this helps and good luck!
