Replacing Halyards on H-22

Greetings, I have had my H-22 for a year and am trying to make it look newer than the '89 that it is. I have stripped and refinished the brightwork over the winter. Next on the list is replacing the halyards. They appear to be the originals. Any tips on what I should replace them with (I think I know the direction I'm heading on this one.) and the best method to replace them without having to shimmy up the mast? Thanks for any direction you can provide! Bill

Easier with the stick up!

Bill: It is actually easier with the stick up. We have used this method several times and I would not consider doing it any other way. We just use a large paper clip and a little rigging tape. It takes about 3-4 min. for each halyard. http://www.sailboatowners.com/upload/display.tpl?folder=Dion73112378230&fno=17 I suggest that you use something like Sta-set of the correct size. Be sure to have the shackles spliced on if you cannot do it yourself. A splice is much stronger than a knot.

Hi Steve, I assume your halyards run thru the mast. My do and the clearance at the sheaves is close, so I took a more paranoid approach: Pull some of the core out of the old halyard and cut 3-4" off. Slip the cover of the old halyard over the new and take a few stitches with whipping line or sail thread. The halyards will run fair and won't separate. Agree on Sta-Set (or similar). If you are going to do your own splices, a braided core is easier than parallel core. Dave Weir Hunter 25.5 "Last Resort"

I was too, but it is a waste of time.

Dave: I wasted my time doing this by sewing the ends of the line together with whipping twine. The paper clip works just at well, if not better. You only need a single wrap of tape over the lines. The paper clip almost works like a hinge and provides less bulk than the stitching.

Dave, That's awesome. I was thinking of sewing the lines together, but your way appears to deliver much less ag. I will try it with the approriate caveats. Thank you for your note and everyone who posted. Fair Winds, Bill
