Replacing H31 VHF antenna coax?

After a lighting strike I need to replace the VHF antenna and coax. It seems the coax is routed down the mast and through the deck to the compression post. Do I need to step the mast or can it be "fished" through the deck step?

step the mast

The cable will likely be sealed at the step to prevent water entry. Also there will be a cable connector joining the mast cable section to the cabin cable section. Stepping the mast will likely be required. Paul I

lightning strike

I was wondering what damage you suffered from your lightning strike? Our 31 was hit by I was told it was a "side flash" and not a direct hit. My wife and I were on board at the time and didn't realize at the time of the major flash/bang that all of the electronics were hit. I lost my VHF, autopilot, speed, depth & wind but no damage to the boat itself. Insurance is picking up the tab and work should be completed this week.

VHF Coax

I have a 1984 31 and unstep the mast for storage every year. The VHF coax is sealed at the compression post and has a connector to join the cabin and mast sections. You will need to unstep the mast to get at these two items. You may have to replace the cabin section as well as the mast section due to the strike and in order to do that the mast has got to come out to get at the area where it passes through the hull.Once the mast is out you may want to cut an access plate in the mast for the future work. good luck with the re-wire John

I don't think we took a direct hit because the only signs of a strike were the depth, VHF, and chartplotter did not work. Did you have to replace your VHF coax?

No, the coax cable was not replaced. The antenna at the top of mast was blown apart and obviously has to be replaced but the coax was tested by a surveyor and appears alright. My boat won't be launched until May so things won't be in operation until then.

Wow, same thing here. I noticed my VHF antenna whip is missing, but the base is still in place. I'll be going up the mast for a closer look. Do you know what kind of test was performed to check the coax?
