I just purchased a 1989 catalina 30 with the M25 diesel. I want to replace both the fuel line and the return line to the tank, but have not been able to find out the size and length of the hose. Also are the hoses just clamped or are they pressed on fittings. I have not been able to visit the boat since the survey, but when I do, I would like to have the hoses and do the repairs.

The supply is 3/8, the return is 5/16 and there's a very short piece of hose on the top of the engine near the injectors which most people forget, neglect or don't know about, I think it's 1/4 (you could do this later, it's always accessible). I find it hard if not impossible to provide hose lengths and wouldn't do it even for someone with the exact same boat as mine. I understand your distance-from-the-boat issue, but you really have to measure yourself unless someone with a C30 just happens upon this post and has just replaced his hoses and recalls or actually has written down what they were. If I were you, I'd figure where my fuel tank was and then just estimate the lengths based on your understanding of how the fuel lines run on your boat. I know they're expensive, but better too long... You can always use the extra lengths in the future with connectors just in case you experience some fatigue somewhere... They're clamped on, the factory used spring type clamps, you'll need good hose clamps.

thanks for the reply. I will estimate the length and add up as you suggested. I hope to connect the old and new line together, and then pull from the tank to the engine. Thanks again

Not a good idea

Open everything up and check all the supports visually.

A good idea, and will do. I also noticed that you are from SF bay area. I sailed once on the bay about 8 years ago on a cat 22, and was hooked on sailing from then on. Never too old.

Another thing to check is whether or not the water separator is between the fuel tank and fuel pump. Stu has mentioned before that many early boats, Catalinas included, had the water separator after the fuel pump, allowing trash into the fuel pump. My '84 C30 was this way, maybe corrected by '89.

As mentioned, I would second the recommendation to check where the water seperator/ primary fuel filter is and put it before the fuel pump. You may not have this issue on a 1989 MKII.

It appears that you like to tackle projects. As you are a new C-30 owner, I would recommend that you remove the "cabinet of 3 drawers" along the aft wall of the galley. It comes out easily by removing approx 6 screws in the frame. With this out, you will be able to poke around and learn about your boat. You will get a clear picture of how and where a lot of the hoses run. You will also be able to directly track the fuel supply line and that will allow you to get a good estimate on what length you need. Good luck.
