I am replacing my fixed head with a Thetford portable MSD w/integrated holding tank. I will need to install a platform in the compartment so the larger portable can sit level in the head compartment. Has anyone tried this? If so, how did you do it? Any info or thoughts would be great. Thanks!

Why are you doing this?

Except in very unusual circumstances, a small portable portapotty is a bit too "basic" a sanitation system for a 27' Catalina. the boat is capable of longer cruises, with more people aboard, than the portapotty can hold. So why are you downgrading the system to the bare legal minimum?

Many Reasons

1. The number of flushes as advertised by the Thetford is more than I get with my current system. 2. Maintenance: There is less maintenance required with the portable system. 3. Smells I get with my current system are frequent. 4. I basically day sail and do some overnights. So other than the "why", do you have any insights into the "how"? Thanks, Mike.

Can't help you with the platform, but I do have...

A suggestion: go with a larger 5-6 gallon pumpable (can be pumped out) portapotty. I recommend the SeaLand 965MSD over the Thetford...it's much better quality than anything else out there. Because the tanks are sealed and get -0- oxygen, the smaller portable models often create more odor problems than any other system...whereas, the pumpable models are vented. There's a full explanation of this in the article entitled something like "Odor Control in Holding Tanks" iin the Reference Library in the Head Mistress forum. If you want even more capacity, you can leave your current tank in place--after some modifications to get rid of the odor problems (also described in the same article) and instead of running the pumpout hose from the potty to a deck fitting, run it to your tank, with a pump to move the contents out of the potty tank into the larger tank. Or, with a little modfication of your present system, and the flush water conservation method described in the article "Flush With Success," you can get rid of your odor problems and prob'ly double the number of flushes your current tank holds. That still leaves you with a little head maintenance...but nothing's perfect. :)
