Replacing Deck Hardware?

Hey everyone! I am looking to replace the clam cleat Catalina installed for the mainsheet with a stopper. How is the current deck hardware mounted? I see nothing on the cabin top to show that they're through deck mounted. Since they're not, do I have to worry about any deck coring in the area? Are the screws just bedded in epoxy? I've never replaced deck hardware before so I'm just curious what will happen when I remove the screws holding the clam cleat to the deck. Thanks for the help. Mike Elmore Windward Hull-C28 Hull #7

deck hardware

I have replaced several sheet stoppers and added several. The job is rather easy thanks to Catalina. Under the sheet stoppers, Catalina placed a thick piece of aluminum plate which is what the bolts are threaded into. Take one of the existing bolts out, go to a hardware store, get a tap the same size and a drill bit that MATCHES THE TAP (very important) and you are all set to put in the new sheet stoppers. The plate is only under the raised area where the sheet stoppers are. Make sure you seal the bolts with a good sealer like boat life to prevent any water leaks. Hope this helps

tap?

Keith, I'm certainly familiar with drills/drill bits, what is a tap? The aluminum plate does seem like a good idea by Catalina though. It's good to hear you've had no problems. Mike Elmore Windward Hull-C28 Hull #7

Epoxy

Any holes you drill in the deck should be double the size you really need & filled with epoxy. Then drill the appropriate size in the middle of the epoxy - no chance of getting the coring wet if it ever starts to leak! LaDonna

tap

Mike, a tap is a drill bit like tool that cuts new threads into that hole you will drill so that the new bolts will screw in. It must be done by hand, not with a drill when you are cutting the threads. In fact, I helped a friend replace the cam with Garhauer sheet stoppers on his 28 just last summer. He loves the results. If you have not used a tap before, it would be good to look in a metal working book available at any library or ask around the dock, I am sure you would not have to look very far before you finding some one who would be glad to help. It is easy to do but there are some simple tricks that help make a clean cut....
