Hi,

I need to replace my companionway slats. I currently have a system with 3 slats, wood top, plexyglass middle, wood bottom. I have a Hunter 23.5 monohull sailboat. I'm open to ideas and suggestions.

Thanks in advance,

Gina

Exact same system was standard on my H37C. They are in the basement. One of my best mods was to go a single panel, nice piece of birch plywood. How many times on and off the boat with something in one hand. Pull the board and set it aside, go in/out, turn and put it back. Did not miss the light from the middle board, plenty from overhead slider. Especially nice with A/C on. I got the idea from my screen which is one piece and it was so easy to use and store.

Doors are nice but expensive. And they would cover some gauges on one side and interfere with a favorite backrest on the other. Also not as secure as my 3/4" solid panel.

I went the other way... Had the plywood door, but awakward and no place to store...

I dug out the old three teak boards sanded and refinished and then made up a nice three pocket bag to store them in while underway...easy to tuck out of the way in the saloon...

In this web site, in the store under cockpits you can find some incredible doors either made in starboard or teak. And I suspect you could pick other woods and that would be fine too. Cruising Concepts is located on Orcus Island in the San Juan archipelago in Washington State. The owner is a very precise guy and all his cuts are computer generated. I've been to his shop.

My present boat has companionway doors made out of starboard...not a screw can be found. I love them. One of the best things I had made for this boat. While there are expensive I think they help in the resail of the boat not that I'm thinking of that now.

But the doors are one of the things that make me like this boat the best. Cruising Concepts is at the Seattle Boat Show on the second floor. Go take a look. And get them from this site.

Gina;

If you are one who would not prefer to make the companionway doors, you may want to check this websites store to see if they can get them for you. The second alternative is to go direct to customer service at Hunter. If you do plan to make your own, one thing to make sure of the top and bottom edges that they are angled upwards except for the top piece to deflect water coming thru the joints.

Re: Companion way doors

Just finished making a new set of drop boards for our '95 H336. I used 1/2" gray polycarbonate for the upper and lower, and a piece of white 1/2" Starboard for the middle one. I went with an overlapping lap joint rather than just an angled cut between boards to ensure minimal water leakage.
