I sail a 1989 Capri 18 and have just upgraded from the working jib to a 135% genny with roller furling. I am not happy with the clam cleats mounted aft the genoa winches and would like to replace them with cam cleats. Any suggestions ? Are angled shims necesssary to improve the angle of the sheet ?

I have cam cleats

I didn't use angled blocks, but I did raise them some for a straighter angle of feed from the winches. I later added fairleads so I can easily trim from anywhere in the cockpit. Another guy here just put the rotating cam cleats with fairleads on his - haven't sailed it yet, but seems to work pretty good sitting in the storage lot. I have part numbers and everything if you want, just let me know.

Cam cleats

I have set up two boats with rollerfurling, and cam cleats. there are a couple of things to consider. Do not install any cam cleats until you sit in theboat where you normally will, and wrap the genoa sheets around the winches. Then pull the sheet tight, and mark where the cam cleat should be installed so that there is not even a wee bit of mis-alignment. If not installed in the correct place, you won't be able to cleat the sheet with a load on. The other thing to consider is how do you sail? Is it primarily single handed? If so, only one set of camcleats will suffice. If you sail with others in the boat, then you'll want to install a second set of cam cleats in the location where your mate will sit and comfortably be able to work the genoa sheets. You will have to carefully place those as described above. The easir you make it for yourself and others, the more they'll want to sail.

Cam cleats

Thanks, Dave. I would appreciate part numbers. How high above the coaming did you mount the cleats ?

Part #s for cam cleats

Sorry I took so long responding. I used Harken #365 Cam-matics, and added the fairleads (Harken #375) later. They sell this exact package combined (as Harken #357), for a slight savings. I used the Harken #295 (7/8 inch) flat riser block. The guy who did the swivel cam cleat used Ronstan # RF58. He said he looked hard at Ronstan #RF60, but they're pretty pricy. I really want to agree with what the others have said here - sit in the cockpit, and envising trimming from various positions, before you drill any holes. I ended up putting mine about 6 inches aft of the winched (on the coamings) and angled in about 30 degrees. Let me know if you want more info.
