Hello I just purchased a Catalina 22. Generally in very good condition. However, I need to replace the halyard blocks that are on top of the cabin. I am not even sure of their correct name so that I can order them. They are located on the cabin top on both sides. They are each 2 line blocks with a red and a blue flip toggle. First, What is their official name. Is there a better item recommended? The ones on my boat now slip badly. Thanks Dave

clutches

You can get a replacement from several different Co., This is going to be a personal decision of yours. You don't even have to use clutches if you choose not too. Some use cam cleats. see where this is going. Best to get a few catalogs and decide whats going to work for you. Are you sure you need to replace them? If they are slipping you might also have a line problem.

Thanks

The boat is an 1985 model, and I am sure they are original. The black roller is worn flat on one side, and the halyard is new. Being new,the halyard is a little coarse and still does not hold. I had thought about cam cleats, but am concerned about removing the clutches and installing cam cleats since there will most likely be color changes due to fading and such. Thanks for the official name though. I will check catalina direct.

Jam cleats

Hi I believe that they are generally called Cam cleats or rope clutches. They aren't factory. I believe that factory equipment are called jam cleats (Horn type) Here's an alternative: http://www.tsca.net/pdf/Making_Wooden_Jam_Cleats.pdf What you have are costly. It may be that the lines running through them are undersized for the hardware and the cleat isn't grabbing as a result. Try Sailnet.com or West Marine if you want replacements. ~Bilbo

two more

You can also look at Layline and APS. I personally like the clutches, I use two triple Lewmars on my boat. Garhaur also makes clutches. Congrats on your boat and good luck. Take your time and look at several before you buy.
