Replacing an inboard with an outboard

I own a Hunter 27 with an inboard Yanmar 1GM. I do not have much way against the tide/headwind. I was considering my options, one of which is to take the entire motor out and replace it with an outboard mounted off the transom. Has anyone done this before? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Prop work

John: My first recommendation is to get some prop work done. If you place an outboard on your boat you will be changing the balance (120lbs) hanging outboard of the stern. Your will not be very pleased if you are in big seas either (motor will be out of the water more than in) even with a long shaft. Take the time to call Bob Kilian at Bay Props in Alameda, CA. and ask him about the special prop that they do ($150 to rework your prop). If you decide not to take that approach, consider a three blade prop ($450). Either of these ideas are cheap compared to the outboard ($2000). If these options do not work, you can always do the outboard. You also want to make sure that your 1GM is operating properly too.

Inboard

John; Go to WWW.Goodoldboat.com and have a free copy of the magazine sent to you. They have an article on installing an outboard in an inboard well built in to the lazarette. Makes good reading even if you decide to keep the inboard. Mac

Thanks for including approx prices, Steve - I'm going to give Bob Kilian a call - never realized their mod would be so reasonable. David Lady Lillie '77 h27

Several Happy owners.

Dave: Bob was in business with his son Tim at Kilian Props. There was a divorce or something that closed the old business. Anyway, Bob went to work for Bay Props. I have heard several owners rave about how much better their boats performed with these props. My understanding is that they put winglets on the prop tip (non-slip) and the cup the blades slightly. This procdure makes the prop perform more like a 3 blade without the additional drag. They can also do the same thing to a three blade too. I plan on having my prop reworked in the next few weeks. I'll let everyone know what we think once it is done and back in the water.

Had Kilian's Do Mine

I had Kilian's do the 15 X 12 on my H 34 a couple of years ago. The boat should have had a 15 X 15 but some of the early 34's got out with the lesser pitch. He re-pitched the prop and added the tips. It became a 14 X 14 after he was done. We picked up almost a knot in boat speed from 6.2 at 2800 to about 7.0 at 2800. It also backs nearly straight and it pushes through rough water better. I highly recommend the relatively small investment. The tips are actually the last half inch of the blade bent backwards and then those are shaped. It looks like you hit something with the prop tips but it really works well. I would sure try that before going to the expense and the work of changing the diesel. As a second thought. IF you were going to change the diesel, would it be possible to put a 2gmf in place of the 1 gm. It would only be about 4 or 5 inches longer. Just a thought.
