I just blew the head gasket and am trying to figure out what are my options for repowering and estimated cost for my options. The engine was made from parts from 2 old atomic engines and for the last 5 years has done fine but had started to burn oil.

don't trash the Atomic 4

Prices for new Yanmars are a state secret! No one is willing to quote a price without a firm committment. But factor in the cost of your old engine. Those things as parts are precious too. You should get a substantial trade-n break for your old engine. If not, convince your lady that it can stay in the garage for a while, while you post the starter, oil pump, fuel pump, carburetor etc. on e-bay. You will have loose change for a year! Also, head gasket replacement is not an impossible job, if you have a torque wrench and some time. Why sink (no pun intended) $5K into a boat that may be worth the same with any engine? Joe

Discussion on CWBB

There has been on ongoing discussion on CWBB where they wanted to replace the A4 with a desiel. The estimated cost would have been a minimum of $11,000. The suggestion was to replace with a rebuild A4 for $4,000 to $5,000 and they had a link to an A4 rebuild site.

Two websites.

I agree with Ken and Joe, keep the motor. A diesel upgrade would have you out of the water for a long time. And make your wallet very light. Here are a couple of websites to help: www.moyermarine.com www.atomic4.com (Related Link).
