I have a 91 Hunter 30 and the survey says the rudder has a slight bent to port. The seller supplied a new rudder. Is this something an owner can do. I am very handy and have lots of tools. Instuction sheets would be helpful. TCOB1

Rudder Installation

You will have to have the yard lift the vessel of dig a hole. If you have to ask for instructions it may be best to hire it out

Hire it out?

......Hire it out and then see the monkeys that are sent out to work on your boat? Sorry Daryl but I found your reply to be very unhelpful and I'm sure the threads author did as well. He is not looking to rebuild his diesel. Nobody will pay attention to your boat like you will. I have the same boat and I just replaced my rudder, prop shaft and packing gland this weekend. My insurance company would not pay for my labor so I hired one of the more recommended mechanics in my area. I had to re-do everything he did. The rudder is simple. If the boat is on stands you will have to dig a hole deep enough to allow the rudder post clear the bottom of the hull. I dropped my rudder when they hauled my boat. Remove the access panel that is under your helm seat by removing the screws along the side. You will see the round steering head. Spray the top of the rudder post and the bolts with PB Blaster the day before you drop the rudder to make things easy on yourself. The steering head appears to be made up of two halves bolted together. You will not need to separate it. Just unbolt the through bolt and use a piece of wood or a punch on the top of the rudder tube to drive the rudder post down. You may want to loosen your steering cables by backing off on the bolts the stick out of the middle of the steering head. They will have the threaded studs from the end of the cables sticking out from them. That is about it on the removal. Since the rudder is bent, take some time to inspect the plastic bushing glassed into the bottom of the hull to make sure it has not been compromised. Take the plastic doughnut (bearing) off of the top of the old rudder and reuse it. I wanted a perfect fit with very little play for my new rudder. The day of my launch I had the rudder painted and ready to go. I had the yard hoist my boat high enough to clear the rudder post. I pushed the rudder up through the stern tube and put wood blocking under it. I then used a floor jack to fine tune where I wanted the rudder. Then, in the cockpit I reassembled the steering head and tapped it down over the rudder post and marked the holes for the bold. I then dropped the rudder again and brought it down to a machine shop and had them cut off the extra post stock and drill the holes out. They charged me a whopping $5.00. I brought the rudder back to boat and put everything back together. Total time from when they hoisted the boat was less than one hour. Very simple. Let me know if you have any questions. New Rudder

Tim, you certainly confirmed that this can be a do-it-yourself job. Thanks Glen
