replacement stock alternator search

Hello,
I have a Universal M-18 diesel with a Motorola alternator 8MR2049K. I'm looking to replace this with the same or similar alternator but am having a hard time finding one that looks like a quality item. Looking at Leece Neville it appears they don't make a replacement alternator for this . All I can find are items from sellers who don't really say who the manufacturer is, Amazon and E-Bay and such. Maybe these are okay but before I pull the trigger on one doers anybody have any suggestions about where to look or what aftermarket manufacturers make a decent product ?

I assume it is the original alternator on this 34 year old boat and know that it is just a 51 amp dumb internally regulated alternator but I have modest electrical needs and the original has provided well for the last 15 years I have had it so I'm not looking to up the game to an externally regulated model.

Thanks for your help.

I've switched to having all of my factory or better than factory alternators and starters rebuild by a appropriate shop. Usually it is cheaper and with better components.

Yes, Thanks for that. Believe it or not I have had a hard time finding one in this area (Redondo Beach / Marina del Rey California). I'm open to suggestions if anyone has a good local recommendation. Not worth driving downtown for this unless necessary.

I have two in the Tacoma area. They are there, you may need to dig a little deeper.

If it does not say Leece-Neville it is a Chinese knock-off. You need to be quite careful with these as LN components often don't fit and the Chinese parts are not available aftermarket. We have had a number of upset customers who bought components, such as an external regulation kit, for their "LN" alt from us that did not fit. This is because it was not a LN alternator but rather a knock-off.. They also don't hold up like a LN will. Also be very careful as many on-line vendors will happily sell you a LN part number but it is not a LN alternator.

Because LN has discontinued many of their older alternators, including the 8MR2049K, we have a custom built alternator coming out in a few weeks that we are calling our "Catalina Special" or the CMI-72-IR. It is a 72A model, a perfect fit for a 3/8" belt, with the Leece-Neville adjustable internal regulator (8RG2043) that can be wired for remote sense. We tried to get LN to build this for us but they needed a minimum order of 500 so it is just easier to buy the components and build them one at a time. The CMI-72-IR will will include a 10mm to 3/8" fit sleeve, high output diodes, custom billet machined 3/8" pulley and uni-directional fan and it can be converted to external regulation, in the future, if desired. We are just waiting on the stators for them now.

There are also lots of other options too.

Sounds good. From your website it didn't look like you carried anything like that. I'll contact you through your website to see what the lead time might actually be.

Thanks

@Richard19068 Unless you are planning on uniting the lines tomorrow and dashing out of the breakwater, you'll find the lead time with MaineSail to be UNBELIEVABLE:):):)

I have an old alternator as well. Replaced it with one from MaineSail. It is in the garage... 70-Amp. Ran it on a local shop test bed and got a thumbs up from the Electrician, then I put it in the box and installed the external regulated one from MaineSail. If you don't find an answer send me a PM.

It would please my wife if I got some of the stuff out of the garage.

Leslie and jssailem thanks so much for your generous offers. I think I am going with the item Maine Sail has.
