Unless someone has a servicable port side spreader they want to sell, I'm going to have to get specific to proceed on this one. Here's my premise for the rig on my 1980 37C:
  • The mast is a Kenyon 5280.
  • It is rigged with SP-4 airfoil spreaders.
How am I doing so far?
I need to verify:
  • the length of spreader to order
  • which tip is used
  • any special considerations
The Rig-Rite SP4 Standard Spreader Assembly uses the end tip as shown below. Is this what I need?

SP4 Spreader Tip: K-10371:
Cast aluminum Spreader Tip features slot for up to 5/16" shroud. Shroud is secured with seizing wire through holes on either side of shroud seat. Spreader Tip measures 3 3/4" x 1 3/8", and extends shroud seat 5/8" beyond spreader tube. With Black Epoxy finish.

Thanks for any advise to anyone whose gone down this chase previously.

Brad

I was going to the lake tomorrow and have it on my checklist to take pictures of the spreader brackets and bring the spreaders home. But with 60% chance of rain and an 80 mile drive wondering if that is smart. Everything you wrote is accurate but we don't know the exact length.

My spreader tips have holes tapped for machine screws on the ends. A small stainless strip bolts over the wire shroud. But I have read that others have the holes on top and use wire to constrain the shroud. So I think that is the correct spreader tip.

Maybe the forecast will improve and I can get that info. Or does someone else want to climb their mast?

Hi Brad

It looks as like you have the correct spreader and tip. The tips on my 1983 37C have one hole for the seizing wire but the dimensions are the same.

The length of the spreader tube is 42 inches. This does not include the tip and the attachment to the mast. The welding of the spreader tube to the attachment in 4 inches long. I hope this helps. If you need any other measurements please ask. Long story but my spreaders are at home so measuring is convenient. See pictures.

Unfortunately I have the only 37C in this area so I have nothing to compare with. It seems there are many variations within the 37C family.

I'll get pictures of the mast next time I'm at the boat.

Today I was able to get a closeup of the spreader bracket. And I brought the spreaders home. You are correct about the dimensions. Mine have a length of 41 and 5/16" not counting the tips. But that is measured in the center and the mast end is curved.

Found this Nyad(sp?) 330 visiting, almost in my old slip. A German couple who have been at sea for fourteen years. I know they have been around once. They plan to winter the boat in Buffalo and then go out the St. Lawrence and back across next spring. I could only wonder if they know how lucky they are.

Brad,

My spreaders look the same as Sailorjack's. Didn't measure them the last time I was up the stick, but they look like that, not like Ed's. On my way home from a cruise down the shore - will be in touch when I get back.
