My boat was just hauled for bottom paint. turns out the rudder is cracked, pretty badly, at the shaft. seems it was patched at some point under prior ownership and neither i, nor my surveyor, caught it. Anyway, i need a new rudder ASAP. Suggestions?

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
I had mine replaced

Mine was replaced before I bought the boat. De-lamination is a common problem with the Catalina 30. They ordered the Rudder through a company in Flordia. It was here quick and they put it in. It was around $2500 repair. I believe the marina that did this was Shroder's Marina in Deltaville, VA. Make sure they barrier coat the new rudder. This is a BIG job. They have to lift the boat to put the rudder in and they have to mess with the steering quadrant.

To far gone to fix it?

Hey Tattoo, first think like a sailor to see if you can repair it, glassing is not that hard. It does depend on the crack, the location and all that but a couple sheets of glass and some epoxy would be way cheaper. Than sand and paint it up. On my 85 C30 I thought the rudder was soaked with water cuz I would see some drips for awhile in the fall after hauling out for winter. I drilled a 1/4" hole in the bottom and almost nothing came out so I just glassed it back in in the spring. You may need to get into it with a grinder and file and all that, but check it out, if you think you will replace it, what have you got to loose, and ask the supplier of the new one if it is any stronger built than the old one. Anyway, I always like to try it myself first, good luck Dean www.blowinganddrifting@yahoo.com
