A friend of mine at my dock has an Erickson 35 (older model). His atomic 4 has a cracked block. He is trying to figure out what the best and most economical way is to replace his engine.

I am not sure what H.P. he should replace with but he is around 11,500 pounds for displacement.

Anyone know of any good sources for marine engines?

He is also considering setting up an electric system. Is there a viable source to do that and what would his limitations be?

Any thoughts would be appreciated and I will pass them on to him.

The most economical way is another Atomic 4.

Otherwise he should figure $12-15k for a new diesel, shaft, prop, installation etc.

One 1970 C&C 35 i sail on is one its third motor :)

1. Orginal A4

2.Saltwater cooled Volvo diesel that rusted through

3.Beta A4 drop in 14 HP freshwater cooled and been in a good 7 years already 12k to 15k is a bit light without a lot of DIY as the A4 to diesel is not really as drop in as it sounds

So those e-power systems cost between $15k - $17k with the battery power. Then how do you recharge them when the batteries go flat?

I think these sytems have a long long way to go before they are practicle. You also need to factor in the cost of battery replacement (I would gess every 5-8 years). Very expensive over the long run.

Does anyone have any idea what the range is on a system like this?

They were quoting 12-14 NM at 1-2 knots and 2.2-2.8 NM at 4 knots. Clearly they are aiming for the day sailor who does not get that far from home and just needs into/out of harbor motor.
They recharge off shore power and if I am reading the specs correctly they are draining the batts down below 10% SOC. I'd suspect you would not get 5-8 years out of them using them like that. Course if that is all you do with them (day sail) and each time out you discharge and you can expect to only get 100-150 cycles discharging them that deeply then that is 150 trips or 5 months of going out every day. If you only go out on weekends (twice) then it is 75 weekends or around 2 years of day sailing. Still sounding pretty expensive no matter how you cut it.

It may make more sense to get a used engine at a fraction of the cost for new. They are always coming and going on ebay. It would be more work though, and not cost effective if you have to pay someone to redo the engine logs and install the thing.

Bad;

I work about 20 minutes from North Plainfield. If your guy is interested in the A-4 up here I can do an initial drive by to see if it might be worth the drive from Virginia. I'm no A-4 expert but My friend had his in my garage for a year and I helped him bring it back to life. So I can tell you what it is when I trip over it.. Sounds like a fairly good price if it's any good. Let me know. If it do it it will cost somebody a days sail at some future date! I've wanted to do a day sail out of colonial beach for a while.

Thank you all. I passed this information to the guy on my dock. I hope he finds something and can get himself back on the water.

Have your friend log on ask his question directly to a herd of other E-35 (mk 2) owners over at www.ericsonyachts.org.
For that displacement he would want at least 20 hp in a modern diesel, and depending on his sailing venue might want 5 to 7 hp more yet.
