Replacement ignition key

Before I lost my iPhone (got it back a month later!) I'd copied info about a fellow down south (GA or FL?) that would supply replacement keys for Hunters. Of course that and other info had been "wiped" from my phone. I did a search here but did not get results. If anyone has the address info or can tell me otherwise how to get an extra key or two I would appreciate it.

I also think you can get these keys from any Yanmar dealer. Call Mack Boring in your area.

If you are looking for a spare ignition key contact a Yanmar dealer or Hunter retailparts@huntermarine.com - Ronnie Barnes – 386-462-3645. I just purchased a spare key from him but you will need to provide the key number.

Yanmar ignition keys are a 'one fits all' Any Yanmar will work.

You are absolutely correct. The reason Hunter Marine asked me for the key number is to make sure it matched my engine.

Not true...I know of at least three different keys Yanmar has used over the years. Two are flat and the current one is round in cross section.

In addition, for several years Hunter made their own engine start panels and these do not take a Yanmar key. These were mostly in the late 90's and can be identified by not having the word Yanmar stamped into them somewhere.

If you have one of these panels and have lost the original key, best bet may be to install a new ignition switch. I doubt Hunter still has keys available.

If you just need a spare, try getting it copied at a good hardware store.

Before you change the electric switch check to see if any key that fits into the lock will work. I went to buy a Yanamar replacement key from my Hunter 30 (1983) with a Yanmar 2GM and was told by the chanderly owner to save my money. He said to try to find a padlock type key that fit easily into the lock and it would work. My master lock key from the locker padlock fit smoothly into the Yanmar lock and sure enough it turned the switch on and off. I have since tried a number of other keys and any that fits into the Yanmar lock works.

Since most Yanmar keys will work in most ignition systems, it's always a good idea of turning your "start" battery master switch to the "off" position when you depart your boat. Otherwise, the thieves of this world find boats equipped with Yanmars easy targets. It's really not a bad practice to follow when securing the boat for the week.

For several years I started my 2QM15 with a flat screwdriver. Then I copied a key from a fellow with a Yanmar one banger. Both worked fine.

The newer Yanmar panels do not use traditional keys. They are barrel keys and cost about $10-12. The newer YM engines use a different type again.
