I'm thinking of purchasing a 1984 31 ft. Hunter. She's in great shape, but has been sitting for quite a while, so it's been recommended that I replace the fuel tank. Where would I find a replacement fuel tank and what are the dimensions I'll need? Thanks!

are you sure?

You can just measure the old one and go from there. Do you really want to make that your inaugural project. we have a 1986 that we bought four years ago. that one, albeit surveyed, etc. needed a lot of love before we got it close to right. take a cruise and decide which system you want to start with. The head (gray water) hoses probably need more immediate attention. The rigging and electrics may need some tweeking as well. We love ours. Hope you get years of sailing out of yours. joe

Jim: Are you sure that you want to do this? I would drain the fuel out and run a tank of soy diesel thru it. If you can get a 80/20 blend (20% soy) it will clean the tank out just fine. You should change the filter before you run the soy diesel and then again after the next fill up. Also check the pickup tube to be sure that the screen has been removed. I do not think that you can remove the tank without cutting out the bulkhead between the aft berth and the 'PIT' area (that is where the tank is located). I would try cleaning up what you have before you do this.

Is it leaking?

I have an '85 H31 and have done nothing with the fuel tank other than adding some antibacterial growth chemical about once/yr. I don't think I would replace the tank unless it was irreparably leaking.

Tempo

My fuel system aboard our 1983 H31 went bad. So I replaced it with a Tempo product. Once all the bad fuel and sludge was removed, the process was very simple. The old one came out easily, along with the fuel lines, through the starboard cockpit hatch. The new one was slightly smaller, so I put in a wood shim to make it fit in the space allotted. Along with the tank, I bought a fuel gauge which included the fitting for fuel return line needed for diesel.

Replacing the fuel tank

Jim, I pulled the tank on my 85 H-31 a couple of years ago because I had a bunch of junk in it that was clogging the fuel intake. On my model, the tank is located aft starboard side, and it's plastic (of some type, anyway not metal). I was able to remove it through the undersink cabinets next to the engine compartment. It required a bit of disassembly (remove sink, cabinet doors, backing panel, drain hose, etc) but it came out pretty cleanly. My advice, if you're convinced you need to do something, is to pull the tank, see what you find, and then make a decision to clean or replace. I also took the opportunity to add a fuel guage while I had the tank out, I would recommend you do the same if you don't have one already. -Richard S/V Discovery San Francisco

Richard....

Richard: Did you use the same opening that the water heater exits through? This is good information. I would have thought that the fuel tank would have been too large. PS: where in the bay do you keep your boat?
