Ever since we bouht the boat we have had that odor in the aft cabin of our 376. Since the boat was only 2 years old when we bought it we assumed (you know what they say about people who assume) it couldn't be the hose from the head to the holding tank. Well guess what, it was, and what a difference. Yes it was a mess to replace (start with taking all the cabnets from the starboard side of the aft cabin) but it was worth it. Now if I could only kill all the mildrew for good I'd be set. On a mooring it is hard to do. RREgge S/V Allie Kat

Same problem over and over again

We have the same issue on a 31. The area below the floor seems to have a lot of nooks and crannies which hold little puddles of slop , which means smells later on. Try to fill the area below the floor (with the pump off)with bildge cleaners and water and go out for a sail to let the water slosh around for a while. Drain this out and do it again until the water draining back into the sump is not a yellow color. Finish up with a little bleach and wqater to kill anything that may be living. Do this until the water is clear. We are now doing this twice a season and although the smell in not completely gone we have knocked it down to about 25%. I hope the boat designers are reading these mails for they are plenty. The engineers of all of the builders should add a few "lift-up and wash out" ports in the cabin floor areas where they know the water will lay. Good luck.
