I'm having issues getting my furling to work now that my rigging is new. I don't have a truck load of rake like I used too and wonder if the headstay needs more tension?

Harken circa 1985...

Its been mentioned to add a block up there to hold the halyard true but this didn't used to be a problem. I'd rather fix it without adding more equipment if possible

Thanks,
-Jared

That block is called a halyard restrainer and is required to avoid the very problem you're describing. :) It's needed to keep the angle of the halyard to the to top swivel at a certain level, check the Harken website. Good luck, you may have just been making it before.

Frustrating...this would of taken 10 minutes to fix while the mast was down.

Anyways...thanks stu!

This answer is correct. You will find over time that the upper swivel wears, increasing friction. Then wrap becomes a problem.
So, that is the reason it used to work

so I took the tension tube off and slid the foil up about 5 inches so it wasn't resting on the terminal and tightened. This allowed us to get the sail up a little more. We put more tension on the shrouds to tighten the forestay a little.

that seams to fix part of the problem. We now have an issue with furling the entire sail up. It seams to be "slipping" at the bottom ever other turn or so when we are trying to furl it leaving the drum empty and leaving the sail about 5 wraps short. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

oh, and looking at the masthead while furling notice that the swivel starts to wrap then spins freely staying true and not wrapping. It could use some lube but its not wrapping like it was before.

thanks!

Disconnected the foot of the sail and pulled it up until the swivel at the masthead is touching masthead preventing it from twisting. Then re-attached foot with spare piece of line which is now about 1.5 ft above the drum. Seams to work!
