Like to know if anyone has done away with the moldy carpet on the cabin walls. Possibly replaced with wood, formica, or other? Thinking this will reduce mildew, and odors while making making things easier to clean.

Check the Archives

Hey Pete, Check out the archives section of this site. There's lots of good info from people who've replaced their carpet with wood, etc. Good luck.

Replace carpet

with vinyl headliner material from Sailrite. I am planning on making this upgrade soon also. At $27 a running yard for the perforated foam backed vinyl, it is expensive, but maintenance would be as easy as a wipe down with mild detergent. Installation appears to be a simple process and Sailrite offers instructions. They have edging available also, but you can use wood stripping to give it accent. I've seen an Allmand 31 redone with this stuff. It looked really sharp and IMHO compares with a high end yatch. The Allmand's owner said he would never go back to carpet. The specific appeal it had for me is that it made the boat's interior light and feel open and spacious.

Headliner Color

Mike, What color for the headliner are you going with? Post some pics when you're done.

replaced wall carpet!

I bought a beat up 1994 Hunter 26. I used a heat gun to remove the old stuff. It did not come off easily. I replaced it with a tan vinyl (matching the tan headliner) with a slight texture print and backed it with some thin foam. I sprayed 3M upholstry glue and applied the foam then repeated with the vinyl. This is a two person job. I added a 1 inch teak trim piece fore and aft between the bottom of the headliner and the top of the vinyl. Got the cushions done in a tweed fabric, made smaller teak ply table the exact same shape as the original, made a ply forward berth extension peice that stores under the forward cushions and rests on the smaller table, took down the foreward curtian, and installed a curtain just behind the companionway steps. Looks great and gives the boat a badly needed reduction in a "plastic" look with the teak trim added.

About the color . . .

Ron, et al. I am going with the #770 matte white, perforated with the foam back. My truck has similar material on the door panels and I like the look of it. Yes, I will post pictures of the project, but it will be awhile.
