Replace Universal Engine

Debating on either changing 1976 gas engine with 9.9 outboard long shaft, a usual modification to this type of boat, or finding a good diesel engine to replace it! The replacement inboard engine allows me to keep the original characteristics to the boat, although outboard can give me more room inside.Any thoughts!

Inboard vs outboard

My choice would be the inboard. If you have ever been out in a sizable chop trying to make way to weather with an out board hung out the back of the boat, you will understand. When the prop comes out of the water, you stop.The Catalina 27 inboard prop is well under the boat. Also, we see a number of C27's go through our brokerage each season and the inboards always go first and for the higher price. Perhaps you can keep that old Atomic-four going for a while longer. Lots of parts are available and we have a fer good used and/or rebuilts in the shop.
