I have an existing thru-hull but I want to put an external screen on it-- like a scoop thru-hull to use as my heat pump intake. I could either replace the existing thru-hull with one that has the scoop integrated or I could get a marelon scoop and simply epoxy it to the hull around the existing thru-hull.

So, what would you suggest? How hard is it to replace a thru-hull of the same size? Should I replace the thru-hull or epoxy a scoop onto the hull?

I've just replaced a seacock and thru-hull as part of my repowering project. The hardest part was boring a larger hole (1" vs 3/4"). The hole saw wouldn't stay centered until I inverted the old thru-hull and used the threaded cylinder as a mandrel (guide) for the hole saw. Worked like a charm. To replace the thru-hull you'll probably have to replace the plywood backing plate, and be sure to seal with urethane. Really no big deal.
