Replace Through Hull fittings?

I have a 1990 hunter 23 and am wondering if it is time to replace the hoses and through hull fittings. They appear to be in good shape. When have other owners replaced them and how? Did you use plastic or metal fittings? What type of bedding material (4200)? I just do not want to arrive at my boat and find the cockpit drain hose has sprung a leak, and just the mast above the water.

My suggestion

I would be tempted to replace the hoses and use two clamps on each end. The through-hulls you should be able to check visually if there isn’t to much bottom paint on it (dry looking cracked caulk, water seepage). When I replaced a through hull in my “other” boat, the yard suggested Lifecaulk. I’m not familiar with H23’s enough to know – is the cockpit drain through-hull below the waterline?

Fwiw, ALL below-waterline hose connections

and all sanitation system connections, whether or not they're below waterline, should have two hose clamps...screws should be on opposing sides of the hose.

H23 Thruhull

Jay, The H23 technically does not have any thru-hull fittings (openings below the waterline). That said, it's still worth monitoring the fittings and replacing as appropriate. I have an 85' H23 however I just inspect the fittings once a season for cracking, haven't repalced them yet. Chuck S/V Windsongs H23

My cockpit drain

is sometimes below the waterline depending on how many I have in the boat and and the water conditions. Regular inspection and periodic maintenance is important to my sense of well being even if such vigilence is not absolutely necessary.

The drain hose to our anchor locker on our 89h23 had a small crack in the hose it was leaking down into the v berth area, it was hard to see because it was cracked on the side facing the bow, so it was not visible, you wont sink this boat for lack of replacing but now is the time of year most of us have more time , so why not get it done now,? take care, Mike
