I found a Venture22 sailboat for sale $1500 but they say the keel fell off into the lake. What would it take to find a new one and reattach it? I am new to sailboats and I am looking for a 22 foot trailerable boat. Any help would be appreciated.

Keep looking... it's not worth much without the keel. There are plenty of other boats at the same price you can enjoy right away that aren't such projects.

I paid 800 for a V222 with a keel and a trailer...see if they will give it to you for free in a couple of months.

Thanks Guys

Appreciate the comments. If they would give it to me for free how much do you think it would cost to replace the keel?

Kinda expensive to replace, Izzy.. I think around $500 for a salvaged one to somewhere in the $2000 range for a brand new one.. Ya might try calling MacGregor and talking to those guys .. The freight cost on something like that is pretty rough. You might be able to find a local foundry that would be willing to cast one for you if you can find a drawing, or you could fabricate a substitute from steel and lead and fiberglass.. again, you'd need a drawing..

Is it a ballasted keel or just a center board? A board, you could almost fabricate yourself but if it is a ballasted keel that boat is sure to capsize if taken out without it.

How the heck did the keel fall off? The pivot bolt is 1/2" stainless steel with a stainless steel lockdown bolt and the aft end is secured by a winch cable. Somebody did something strange to make this happen. Contact MacGregor in Costa Mesa, Cal. I think the keel weighs around 400 lbs.? Shipping will cost you a bunch. Better off looking for a "whole" boat. We owned a 1972 V222. Lotsa fun. Fair winds...

I had one without a keel. When looking for one on ebay. I told my wife that I had found one for $750. She said go get it. What I did not tell her was that it was attached to a Mac/Venture 25' with a Honda 9.9 and a good set of sails for $710 (no trailer). Guess what my current sailboat is? Had to get a lot of barnacles off. So you will probably find a whole boat easier. If you want to salvage that boat, go with sheet steel (multiple layers if you have to), then cover with fiberglass, like the original ones.

Izzy,
I agree with Joe. I would pass it up. The old Ventures had swing keels unlike the O'Day 222s, 23s, 25s, and 26s which had keel/centerboards and could sail with or without the centerboards because they had keels. The swing keel on the old ventures, Catalina 22s, and Chrysler sloops, were the keels, and you can't sail these boats without them or they would capsize.

The keel and the pivot pin is the whole boat.. Because replacing them is quite the task. The keels weigh over 600lbs.. Even when looking at ones that do have the keel and pivot pin in place consider them suspect, especially on old boats.... The first thing you want to know is the condition of the pivot pin and winch cable.. Poor design is a pivot pin below the waterline - they always leak... I like shoal draft inline keels.. I stay away from swing keels.. I own an 18 tangerine that I wet - store in the bay on a mooring.. She is bone dry.. No swing keel to worry about...

Just found this McGregor/Venture 25' for $1200 in Des Moines, Ia. It has spent most of it's life in storage. It has new sails 5 years ago and only sailed with them once for 4 days.

The owner is laid up with back surgery and disposing of different things. It comes with a trailer and a 9.9 Mercury Outboard.

It has a center board and is most likely in much better shape than the one you are looking at.

I did call and talk with the owner, because I thought that I could maybe buy it and touch it up a little and re sell next spring and make a little.

Run, don't walk, to the nearest exit on this one!

Here is my story of woe: (cue sad music here)

I did the same thing when looking for my first boat. A charity advertised a Mac 25 for $1000 without the keel. I figured it would be an easy fix.

When I got to the charity location, I found out that someone else in the group had just sold off the mast, boom, and rigging as well. That should have been a sign...

I was urged by "someone" to get it anyway - that those things could be found and easly replaced. Stupid me, I listened. (and, surprisingly, we still talk to this day)

I was lucky. I searched through many sources with no luck. I happpened to find a boat scrapper who just happened to have "parts that might work". I negotiated with the seller to lower the price enough to compensate for the items needed.

I then went to the scrapper - over 100 miles away. He did have a keel (he was using it as a ramp to transition between a gravel yard and his concrete driveway). He said he had a "mast that would work". Yet, it was from a different vessel. Wrong spreaders and such. My faith in the project began to wain.

There were other things wrong with this boat as well, but the story is getting a bit long here as it is.

To summarize, I ended up spending $1000 plus time and energy to gather a bunch of parts, which to this day I'm still trying to figure out how to make into a working vessel. In the meantime, I have come across a number of other boats, and even picked up a newer Mac 25 (complete this time, thank God) for $1000.

Take your time, look at a number of boats, watch the advertisements such as Craigslist, and you'll be sure to find a better deal.

Like Rum Runner I found a MacV222 for $800 on a trailer with 5 sails and a 10 HP OB. Sold the OB for $300.

I remember this V222. The guy was on this list a while back telling of how his keel fell off while sailing. Search the list you might find it again. A guy on the list gave him a quote to make him a new keel. It was a lot.

I always thought I'd stay away from a swing keel as well but:

1. Easy to launch matters to me.
2. Catalina 22 swing actually performs better than a C22 fin because the keel goes deeper into the water.

After 6 months in a slip - my only bilge problem is some dust...

Maybe there is some hope here

Appreciate the comments. If they would give it to me for free how much do you think it would cost to replace the keel?
There is a listing in the Macgregor forum for Mac 21 parts. Some guy is converting his boat, and I suspect has the keel available.
If you can get the boat cheap enough, and if the keel is the same for the Mac 21 and this boat, and the guy parting out the Mac 21 is close enough, it might work out for you in the long run.

That's an awful lot of IFs, though...

As far as bargain boats go, I recently saw a Mac 25 advertised on CL for $200 in Stockton, CA. (no trailer though): http://sacramento.craigslist.org/boa/2055211194.html.

So keep an eye out - you never know when a bargain is going to come along.
