I have a 1982 - 30 with a DEAD engine . I also have a newer 15 hp long shaft outboard.

I woul like to know if anyone has made an outboard conversion and how did it work. The boat is all good except the engine.

any comments wil be welcomed.

I have a 79 30 and it is my first inboard. My previous boat was a Catalina 22 with a long shaft outboard. When I had to motor into the waves with the 22, the prop would sometimes come out of the water when the boat was pitching. The first day I had my 30, I motored it home 6 hours into the teeth of 18kts of wind. I was sure glad it had the inboard. I think an outboard would have had the prop coming out of the water and that is no fun on a day like that. JMHO. Best regards, Tom

I have removed the inboard Atomic 4 from my boat,
and have 'repowered' with a 6HP long shaft 4-stroke outboard.
I gleefully removed every last vestige of the inboard,
likely totaling 500lbs. Removing the engine, fuel tank, exhaust system,
wiring harness, starting battery, etc... opened up a lot of usable space
in the boat. I removed the prop shaft and strut, and glassed and faired the holes,
as well as the seawater intake, eliminating two places for water to enter the boat.
The 55lb outboard pushes the boat every bit as fast as the inboard did,
while using 1/3 the amount of fuel. The outboard can be steered with a long
'tiller' on the throttle which helps in low speed maneuvering.
The sailing performance of the boat has increased dramatically,
especially in light air.
It can be tricky getting the boat up to speed in a choppy sea state,
but as soon as it is up to speed it will carry though some rough conditions
without too much trouble. The 15HP should power you just fine.

With the shape of the transom, and the height of the transom, from where the motor would be mounted, to the water, it wouldn't work very good. Any wave action would bring the prop out of the water. Also the resale value of the boat would decrease. I've got an 83 Hunter 30 and it doesn't seem feasible. I'd just drop the cash for the repair of the existing motor.

Motor

Hi John, if it were my boat I would repair, rebuild or replace the existing engine. It will make a big difference in motoring performance as well as when it comes time to sell your boat and purchase a bigger one.

John: Do you have any idea what is wrong with the engine? I may be something simple. I believe that you have one of the new engines either a QM or GM model. It is worth having it looked at before you try to retro fit something that may not be the "best" option.

Hi Steve,

The engine was submerged in salt water. The boat was pumped and the packing fixed and the oil changed . I have tried everything but can not get it to budge. Since my question a local votech school said they woul rebuild it if possible. I will remove it next week and get it over to them Wish me luck

Thanks

Engine

Hi John, wise choice. Good luck and I hope it works out for you. What brand is the engine? How long was it submerged and was it fresh or sea water? If it was not submerged that long it may clean up and run just fine. Please let us know the outcome.
