Hello there, I saw a few postings in the archive of this forum on this issue. All of them are about replacing cushion covers. In my case covers are in a perfect shape, but foam stinks. So I am thinking about replacing foam itself. Question: 1. Where to order/buy foam replacement? 2. How to cut it? Thank you for your help. Victor

Contact Catalina Manufacturer

Recently we replaced both the foam and covers for our C27. The best prices, by far, were from Catalina (not the sponsor of this website, but the boat manufacturer in California). Good luck.

electric knife

you should be able to buy foam from local sources much less than the manufacturer. use an electric carving knife to cut and shape. it works very well and easily.

cushion recovering

Hello, We have just purchased a used Catalina 30, that has the original cushions, that need recovering or replacing. Can you give me some more information on how to contact the Catalina manufacturer in California that you liked? Thanks for your time, Beth Shilling

You can find them through their web site at http://www.catalinayachts.com And to reiterate, CatalinaOwners.com (this web site) is not affiliated with Catalina Yachts.

fabric for replacement covers

I need to reupholster the cushions. Any suggestions on type of fabric or is it just a matter of personal taste? Thanks!

I just replaced the entire interior foam and fabric with them for $850. A wonderful father/son duo. They ship as well. 410.675.7426

Commercial grade fabric.

Aeb: When you are looking for a fabric you really want commercial grade materials (like they use for commercial furniture and airplane stuff). Be sure that does not have cotton in it too. Many of these fabrics are treated with some type of chemical treatments to resist stains etc. Many of the upolstery shops can tell you how it will hold up in the sun. If you have a cushion that sits on fiberglass, you may want to consider using a vinyl piece. This makes cleaning the mold and mildew easier if you build up condensation. You also want to be sure to use heavy duty plastic zippers and not metal (they rust).

fabric suggestions

Thank you so much for the suggestions. I am looking for recover the cushions that are inside the boat on the "couches". Does all the advise still hold or can I just use "regular" upholstery fabric?

Yes.

Aeb: Cotton fabric will not hold up well. I still have the original upholstery in our H'31. A top quality fabric will last for many years. Spend a few buck more now and you will not need to do it again in 4-5 years.

Phyphertex

We replaced all our cockpit cushions with new foam and covers. The old foam was the standard soggy open cell foam. The new stuff is quite firm closed cell foam. We used open weave phyphertex for the covers. The things dry instantly and will float forever if needed. But the phyphertex has not stood up as well as we would have liked. The foam is perfect. Wife did all the work.
