Replace Bulkhead Compass

I believe the time has come to "plug the hole" that currently hosts my compass.
The problem, there is a 4" diameter hole there. I don't feel the need to install another compass in that location. The original compass (broken) was in the bulkhead when I got the boat. I found a replacement compass (now mounted, but doesn't fit, or work) in one of the storage compartments. The replacement costs scare me away from purchasing a new compass. I also like "reclining" against the bulkhead unimpeded!

Any suggestions?

Thanks!
Mark

That is a tough job for someone who has not done much glassing. To get it where you could not tell there ever was a hole there is extremely difficult. I would hate to try it and Plastics is one of my college minors (Industrial Tech. Degree) Chief

Here's a pic of my attempt to adapt a compass that didn't fit (hole in bulkhead bigger than what was required). I've considered simply mounting a "plastic board" that would cover the hole. However, I hope that maybe there are some other, more creative, ideas out there.

I have 2 big holes I need to plug on my H30. I plan on using white starboard. I'll cut it round maybe 3/4" oversize and rout the outside edge with a quarter round bit. I'll rout the flip side to perfectly match the hole to a depth that will be even with the cabin liner inside. Probably mount it with 5200.

There is a recent thread on this forum titled: "New chart plotter and depth gauge installation" where he shows how to fill a hole in the bulkhead.

I had the same issue. I simply cut a piece of plexiglas, painted it white, and mounted it over the opening using the same holes from the compass. I used 4200 to seal it.

Oday, most likely I'll steal your idea!

Use a cheap Malwart cutting board for the circle. Very easy, and doesn't look too bad. You may find a desirable compass down the road that you want, and you won't have to drill another hole where you patched it..

Chris, we were just down in Southport at the beginning of May. We lived in Carolina beach when our daughter was born, decided to vacation there with her husband and new baby (our 1st grandchild!!). One of our journeys was taking the ferry over to Southport for the day. Wow, that place has really made some nice changes!

Yeah, Southport is not what it used to be. Ten times the people than ten years ago it seems.

Hey, that ferry ride is still way cool. Ride it across with your vehicle for five bucks. I'll ride it back and forth in the winter just for the water time..
