I am replacing my single 12v 4D-2 house battery in my 2000 Hunter 420 because of age and a bad cell. Someone suggested replacing it with two 6v golf cart batteries, mainly because they're easier (because of weight)to lug into place, but also golf cart batteries are used to being drawn down and recharged. Are the 2 golf cart batteries instead of the 1 4D-2 battery a better idea? If it is a better idea, should I connect them in "series" or "parallel"? Thanks for any help.

The 6V batteries could be a good alternative;

Just make sure you have good clearance above them for installation and maintenance; they stand 3-4" taller than they typical 12V units. If one chose to use them, they would be connected in series. Advantages would be they are easier to move around and place in the compartment and if one cell went bad, you would only have to replace one of the units; saving effort and money. Down side is they require a little more cabling and tie-down work.

Tad, i responded to you on the other forum asking for clarification which I see you are giving here. To answer your question, two golf carts IMHO is a better solution, albiet more expensive for wet cell versions. On our Hunter 356 with typical use (refrig/freezer, lights, electronics, fans, pumps etc, my four T105s will last me about 3 fulls days on the hook) They are taller as others have said so make sure you have the space, but easier to move around. tim

Tadd,

As another 420 owner ('01), I can tell you that 4 6v Trojans (and probable almost all other 6v) batteries won't fit in the space where your 2 4D's are. The are both too tall and their combined lengths will be too long. I replaced both of my origonal 4D wet cell batteries 4 years ago w/ 2 4D AGM's. I couldn't be happier. They are excellent at holding a charge and have been vertually maintanance free. Yes, they cost a bit more, but IMHO, they are well worth it ! ! As far as weight, I just paid a couple of younger guys (a case of beer each) to lift out the old 4D's and bring in the new 4D AGM's.
