Has anyone replaced their rudder with the "Newrudder" of Florida. The time came to replace the rudder that had split because of freezing as best we could tell. Rusty drip coming out for days. One other question, the top of my rudder post (Catalina 30) is open and I could see water in the post. Should there be something to prevent water from entering at this point. I do not see a drain for water that makes it through the cockpit access to the steering quadrant (other than my rear bunk). Where are the rudder stops located? Have not found a picture on the net but I recall seeing one once. thanks

Foss Foam

I don't have any personal experience with Foss Foam rudders but I have heard very good things about this company. I've spoken to Bob Walker over there directly and he is a good guy. See related link below. Best, Trevor

Foss Foam?

Most folks who have spent time trying to maintain Foss Foam Original Equipment rudders on various mid-80's Hunters would caution you to look for a product that will not split or freeze or otherwise absorb water and become a constant maintenance issue.

Foss gets my vote

I had Foss build me a new Rudder for a Cat 30 I had purchased a few years back. The yard had installed the Rudder incorrectly, but tried to blame Foss. Turns out I used the Rudder for the season, then Foss made good. They replaced the Rudder even though they knew it was not their fault. I actually sent a letter to Practical Sailor praising their fine service. I would suggest Barrier coating any new Rudder prior to bottom paint. Bottom line, Foss Foam is a quality company that stands behind their product.

Try This

I noticed that my rudder had a huge crack in it this year -- it was loose and would definitely not hold up under pressure. I frantically called around to try to replace it & learned that it would cost $1400 and would take some time. I brought it to a good glass guy who fixed it solidly for $800. It's finished and I have full confidence in the end result.

A Better Idea?

I lost my rudder last fall, and I'm replacing it with a solid rudder from Ida Sailor. They guarantee it for life, and they make one for your C30.
