As you can see from my photo, my Yanmar 3GMF electrical panel needs some repair work. l plan to install a new toggle switch in the hole on a very thin ply backing piece glued onto the back of the panel and then use black fibreglass to finish the front of the panel and permanently secure the replacement switch in place.

Unfortunately I am not at the boat and can not remember what this switch does!! I think that it is the panel light and the other one is the test switch for the warning overheating buzzer, but I could be wrong! The difference is that the test switch would be a momentary switch and the panel switch would be a regular on/off variety.

Can anyone remind me of these functions so I can buy the correct toggle switch?

Thank you

Neil

The toggle switch in the middle above the start switch has 2 functions. The up position is momentary and tests the warning lights. The down position is an "on" position and turns on the illumination lights for night operation. I don't know what would have been in the "hole" in the lower left area.

The hole might possibly have been occupied by a previous owner's foot when the tach was operating intermitently. :cussing:

allen, interested in your reply! Do Yanmar tacks have a reputation of acting up?

My Yanmar tack sometimes goes to full scale, then corrects itself after a few hrs, or on the next day.

Sometimes also, the engine hour meter ceases to read, ( &, I think, ceases to count hours as well). Have never solved this, but did suspect a ground problem.

The hole is where the engine kill cable knob should be. I had the same issue and was able to buy a Yanmar replacement panel (and new cable) at a very resionable price.

Mine gets intermittent. When I start the engine sometimes the needle clmbs very slowly to the idle rpm over 5 min. Then it is slow to indicate cruise rpm. When I shut it off the needle stays high for maybe 1 minute before dropping to zero. Something is gummed up. Can be frustrating.

Mike is right, the kill knob is there normally. If it gets hard to pull it is possible to break the panel. Many owners have had to relocate the kill cable.

Mike, where did you get the panel at a reasonable price? I am interested but the prices I have seen are way to high.
Thanks
Abe

Yes the fuel shut off. These cables tend to corrode and and difficult to pull. I would remove it cable from the panel and reposition it. The new covers panels are only about $40-50 if I remember correctly.

Fuel Shut-Off Cable...

If your fuel shut-off gets hard to pull out, disconnect its end at the pump lever and pull it out a little bit further until the cable itself is visible. Once there, squirt WD-40 or PB Blaster into the gap and work the cable back and forth several times.

Do this repeatedly as necessary to free up the cable as the spray stuff will get worked all the way down to the engine end and drip out.

Shove the shut-off all the way in and reconnect the cable to the fuel shut off lever at the engine. Fire it up and give the shut-off a pull to be sure it is working properly. If not, you will probably need to replace the cable.
