My local yanmar parts guy looked at me like I had three heads when I asked for a rebuild kit for the raw water pump. Anyone know of a part number or numbers for this? It drips bout a drop per second while engine is running. Dan

Try a replacement paper gasket & impeller

On my 2GM20F, there is a raw water impeller housing. The impeller in the housing acts as a raw water pump. The paper gasket which seals the housing is often damaged. Clean the metal seat carefully, replace the impeller (use a hose clamp to ensure that the blades are in the proper direction) and replace the paper gasket. This should solve the leak problem and put off impeller failure. Good Luck.

don't forget the screws

Along with the impeller and gsk, you would be wise to get the cover screws, they are brass and have a tendency to break. It is fairly easy to remove them from the housing if they do break. And if you have to order all your parts and wait for them to arrive by mail, a cover may be a consideration for if it is worn you'll want to replace it also.

Hex screws

You should consider replacing the cover screws that are phillips head with hex screws that you can remove with a wrench or socket. May help in the future if you ever strip the phillips head out. The yanmar parts place told me about them and I installed them my last impeller and casket replacement

YES

Yes Dan, there IS a "rebuild kit" for the raw water pump on your Yanmar. I have one sitting in the "Parts Locker" on my 33. As I recall it includes the impeller, gasket, screws, bearings, seals, and cam/wear plate. It costs considerably less than a new pump. I'd give you the part number but the kit is on the boat, and I'm not. I'll try to remember to get it for you next weekend. If at worst you can't get your local parts guy to get up off his butt to find the number you can order it from Mack Boring. I know they have it. mackboring.com 800-622-5364 Do you find any advantages to having three heads? And just for grins, check the hosees and connections. They're often the culprit in a w/p leak.

Which pump?

Hi Dan, Which pump are we discussing here? The responses, all good ones, seem to be referring to the pump on the front of the Yanmar, the one that circulates internal cooling water. To me the raw water pump is the one that pulls the fresh water from the thru-hull. Sometimes it is one and the same. But on my boat it is an external belt-driven pump. It is not in the Yanmar parts catalog but I do have the numbers at home. Ed(schencked@bfusa.com)

REBUILD IT!!

I would definately say rebuild it! I just rebuilt mine (for a 2QM). It took all of about an hour including taking it off and putting it back on the engine. When I priced a replacement I was quoted in the neighborhood of $300. Compare that to an hour of labor and about $25 (if I remember correctly) for the parts kit. I would agree with replacing the cover screws. The heads on these seem to wear out pretty quickly. While you have the pump off the engine, you might consider replacing the belt as well.
