I am in the process of repairing the cabin top depression on my 1979 Hunter 27. Loosened the shrouds and jacked up the mast. Slid it forward on a piece of plywood and made secure. Removed top of cabin and rot did not appear to be as bad as feared. I will fill in with glass and epoxy and probably add a metal plate for mast step. Also, the main bulkhead is rotted at the top and will have to be replaced. Will also replace the compression post before moving the mast back. This is my first attempt to post a photograph. there was a great write up on the procedure for fixing this problem permanently not too long back. check the archives. the author recommended an aluminum plate embedded in your repair. chris

Check rib
There's a wood rib, covered with glass, under the sole where the compression post is. On my friend's boat, the wood had rotted out, due to constant water in bilge, causing the post to drop.

I am quite impressed that you were able to do this without removing the mast altogether. Good work! Not that I haven't been proven wrong already, but I would be wary of removing the compression post to replace with the mast still on the deck. Also, you will definitely want to drill a test hole into the next layer of core. If you have bulkhead rot and compression post rot, there's a good chance the next layer under what you have removed has rot. But again, I was wrong when I said I didn't think you'd be able to do the first part without pulling the mast altogether. Good luck. John
