Getting my 84 mac 25 ready for the water and found the jib winches in sad shape. One is completely frozen up the other works poorly. I suspect the winches are original equipment. I loosened the three nuts holding each to the boat but they were still solidly stuck to the boat. There is a very large screw accessible where the crank attaches. How do I remove and dismantle these winches. They are black, but I didn't write down the name of them.. any help out there ?

winch service

Don't believe yu have to remove winch to service. I googled Lewmar winch and found a site where you can downloard a service manual. Don't know what brand you have. I'll quote from a Dave Doolin msg I saved from 7/7/04: "Ihave had severalLewmar one speed models. I think all of them held together with one circlip at top of drum. When clip remoed the drum lifts up and off the base. The 6 does not have roller bearings, but the springs and pawls can fall out and be lost when the drum is lifted off. Get an empty cardboard box about a foot square and cut hole about dia of winch. Drop box over winch before disassembling. Any parts that fall out should be contained in box. Leave winch attached to boat. Not nec to remove to service." Hope this helps. David

Enkes

Looks like a single direction winch.... Only 2 Pawls.... Most don't recommend Geasing the pawls... I have the KS8 winch and my investigation indicates that the only solution for me is replacement.... I am working other possibilities but not real optomistic... Apparently Enkes is still in business but not real active with the smaller winches...

WD40

If the WD40 got them working, maybe it means the winches were just dirty and not damaged or worn out? I have somewhat of the same issue so I think Ill try that also. If you shouldnt grease, is there any reason that a good drenching with WD40 should be avoided? I rebuilt the cam cleats on the traveler in my boat. There sure are a LOT of little balls involved in those..

Grease

I have been told that grease collects dirt and grime and actually gums up the works.... WD40 or light oil should be fine for the internal workings but be careful not to get it onto the running rigging.... The only reason to open the winches would be to clean the grime out...

Winch Grease

Go to a bicycle shop and look for a green oil they use to lube bicycle bearrings. It will stay put much longer than WD40. It's not just lubercation you are looking for, but protection from corrosion. A better, but slightly more $ would be Triflon. It comes in both aresol cans and paste. It is a teflon based grease that was made just for boats. Malloy owns the Co. and also races off shore boats. Yes that's the same Malloy that owns Atlantis Foul Weather Gear, and Malloy Boat Yard in Sag Harbor NY. It is very slick and water proof. It was designed not to wash off.

dry grease?

The green top bike oil is dry grease, vs the red top which is wet... A tip I read on good old boat was when working on winches, take a cardboard box, and cut a hole in the bottom, the size of the footprint of the winch. (4" ?) slip the box over the winch, then disassemble... if any springs paws try to run a way, you've got them contained in the box. required for in water work...

Thats them ....

Those are the ones on the boat.. It looks like the large center screw holds it together. The winches are looser than before but they don't latch all the time. I suspect the groves where the pawls engage are not all clean. I will find a real big screwdriver and try to remove the screw for cleaning.

Clean em

When I first got my boat my winches were real hard to turn. I found a winch service kit at West Marine, that had lubricant and spare parts. I cleaned all parts real good, replaced the pawls and springs, they work fine now. You don't have to remove the through deck mounting bolts. Just remove the circlips on top, should be easy to come apart. I like the box with a hole in it idea, especially if your boat is in the water, so you won't lose any parts.
