Problem: wood cleat? brace?? that goes from starboard side of centerboard to seat. Three screws attach it to the front edge of the seat. Wood inside of molded seat is rotten . How do i repair this? i think that these wood cleats/braces? on each side help hold the boat from spreading apart. Yes??? Looks like i need to get this fixed before i sail again. That was to be tomorrow after lunch.... If some one has done this repair or knows how to do it pl;ease give me a call 585 808 1662 cell 585 268 5533 home I'd realy like to get this fixed and on to the water. thanks scot photo at; http://www.flickr.com/photos/8061431@N07/2630043408/

centerboard trunk

I used to sail a 17 ft daysailor,is this the same boat ,if so I believe the centerboard trunk would get awfully sloppy w/out the seat /brace. You could try epoxy in the old wholes,or possibly a second peace under the seat on the starboard side as a temp fix. If memory serves me right their is no access under that seat and if their is it is probably some sort of flotation fill inside . Call Rudy at D&r Marine in assonet Mass. 508 644 3001,he used to work at Oday and he has some good ideas.

Centerboard brace

I think that Jeff is right. These wood supports act as a brace for the centerboard, but it also has a cam cleat attached to it so the brace needs to be firmly attached to the seats. Are those round head wood screws or are they machine bolts? How do you know that there is wood under the seats and not foam flotation? If it's an air chamber for flotation, you could cut an access hole under the board and install a deck plate. This could allow you to install a plywood back-up plate for nuts bolts and washers. I would give Rudy Nickerson a call before you do this, though. He may have a better idea on this. Where the board attach's to the seats, it appears that they installed wood screws close to the edge of the seat where there is a plywood core. You could install a short piece of 1"X3" under the existing brace board and bolt it to the side of the seat. Then you could secure the brace to this 1"X3" with wood screws and glue provided that you have a deck plate. Beckson make a 6" and an 8" with a screw-on cover. These are just ideas and I really don't know what is inside those seats, but I'm pretty sure that Rudy could tell you. Good luck! Joe

centerboard repair

Thanks for the thoughts guys. The seat is a sealed flotation chamber and there is foam in side as i can feel it through the drain plug. after removing the board and poking in the screw holes i can feel the rotten wood where the scerews went in. I did a tempory fix with some expanding moly bolts. Hope this gets me through the summer sailing. we trailer it to the water and only sail a few times but want it working well. When i have the time i am going to open up a 6 inch hole in the front end of the seat on the verticle end and access the rotten wood. remove it and see if i can replace it with piece of billet aluminum, and tap and thread it for stainless bolts. Fiberglass it in place and seal the access hole. Not a quick fix but should be better than new. Later Scot
