Over the past two years some items have fallen to the cabin floor in my 2000 Hunter 290. Some have left gouges and other are very minor scratches. I would appreciate any advice on how to fill and refinish. Also, having never done this, I would like to know if this is something I should "tackle" myself. One other note, I have seen the newer model Hunters and notice that they have a very glossy finish to their teak floors. Is this something I can do as well. Thanking in advance for any ideas and suggestions, Mark Brown

Clean and fill.

Mark: I would suggest that you completely clean you floor before you decide that you are going to put a finish on your floor. I assume that you have oiled wood that has a lot of dirt and crud in the grain. You want to be very careful that you do not raise the grain any more than you need to. The reason of this is the veneers are very thin and you need to minimize sanding to a minimum. Once the floor is clean, you can decide how bad the scares are and fill them with some wood filler (if required), You may want to get a book on refinishing wood floors to give you some ideas. Once you have cleaned and prepped the wood, you need to decide on the new finish. I would suggest that you look at the Poly finishes, Daly Sea Fin, and Varnish finishes. Daly's was the finish used on many of the Hunters over the years. It is an oil finish but looks like varnish (very durable). You want to find a finish that is not too slippery when wet. Once you start varnishing the sole you will probably want to look at varnishing the rest of the cabin area <g>, so be careful with your decision.

Steam dents!

If you have any dents you can fetch those out by putting water on and ltting it soak in. The placing a hot iron on the area, the steam brings the wood back to shape.

Good idea!

Colin: That is a good idea. I had forgotten about this method. I would think that he should try this prior to any sanding too. The water is going to raise the grain so you want to make sure that you minimize the sanding.

Another cabinet maker's old trick, along the...

same lines, is to moisten a cloth, place it over the dent and use the hot iron to steam moisture into the wood cells causing them to swell. Terry

daly's profin

I used daly's profin #15751 on my 2001 290 floor and table top three coats ,be careful you can't sand too much I used steel wool a lot .I didn't have much luck getting the bad dents out,I used paint thinner and steel wool to clean first and than three coats with steel wool in between coats and it looks great just like the boat show ones do,also used it on the doors ,table and steps .
