I have a 1994 Hunter 29.5. The radio that came withe the boat is the Apelco 5160. Finally crapped out. It is no longer made and either need to repair or replace. Its location id on the pedestal but we have auto pilot so new radios may be a problem when installing. In view of that, does anyone know where Ican repair the radio and save possible future mounting problems with a new VHF radio? I live in South Jersey.

I had a Aplelco radio for many years, real good radio. Last year the transmitter quit working, could only receive-called a radio repair shop, they told me it was not worth repairing, the guy said by the time I pay him $75.00 just to open it up and find out what was wrong with it, plus parts to fix it, It just wasn't worth repairing. Went to WM they had a sale that month on radios, picked up a new radio for about 160.00

I purchased a new West Marine user friendly menu VHF radio for ~$170 and installed it the cabin last November after I purchased the sailboat. Then I learned about a VHF/GPS/Floatable handheld radio from Horizon HX851 for ~$230 on line or you can purchase the 850 model for ~$170 on-line. Just purchased that to have in the cockpit when I single sail it in SF bay and off shore. Both have gps andthe same emergency MMSI number logged into them.

The handheld has a built-in gps. The fixed mount is tied into a garmin 3210 gps and radar. Between them they provide a lot of flexibility and redundancy.
