I am considering a move from Olympia, Washington to Reno, NV. I have checked on the availability of slips on Lake Tahoe, and there are no slips or expenses slips. I like keeping my Hunter 23.5 in the water for ease of use. My questions is are there any other options for sailing in the Reno area. I would like to check out as many places as possible so I know what to do with my boat. I do not want it to become a lawn fixture.

Dave: If you put your boat in the Sacramento Delta, you can sail year round. If you put it at Tahoe your basic sailing season is May - Sept/Oct. You can either give me a call or email me about harbors in the Delta. We pay $5.75/ft/mo. This includes utilities. Sailboats only too. Tahoe is a Small Lake
Lake Tahoe is a small lake. The first time I sailed there I launched my 16 foot day sailer at north shore and that evening I was anchored at shouth shore near Tahoe keys. The next day I sailed over to the Nevada side and up the east coast for a bit then beat it back to the north shore boat ramp. With your boat I think you'd get awfully bored. I'd agree, the delta and San Francisco Bay has more to offer.

John: Now come on, it isn't that small 22 miles long and 12 miles wide. Clear clean water. It is a wonder place. Once you get used to warm water and warm weather of the Delta it is difficult to think about being land locked at Tahoe. I always enjoy going out on Tahoe once or twice a season on our friends power boat, but I am sure glad we are in the delta. You have access to over 1000 miles of water ways and the SF bay is only a few hours away by boat. We drive past Lake Tahoe every weekend on our way to the delta. I am always amazed by it beauty.

Two years ago I chartered a boat in Tahoe during the first week in August. The wind never built until 1300, and we were invariably hearing thunder by 1430. We were the tallest (and often the only) mast in every mooring field where we stayed, and spent many afternoons rowing ashore to watch the lightning from a local cafe. I love Tahoe, but I'll never do it in a sailboat again. ......... Sacramento, which is part of the Delta system, is only 136 miles from Reno. From there you can sail all the way to San Francisco Bay. Be aware that most of the marinas in the Sacramento area are covered, you may have to look for end ties.

John: We are in a 'Sailboats Only' marina. It is 168 miles from our house to the marina (about 3 hrs) drive. From Reno, you can easily knock off 30 minutes off these times (hwy 80 most of the way). Your experience is really not the norm at Tahoe. Usually a few periods of thunderstorms each season but that is about it. What we have found is that you need to have layers of clothes and work with a short sailing season (midwest sailing season) & VERY expensive prices ($8-15/ft/mo) etc.

Sacremento
This sounds pretty good and the price looks good. A slip in Tahoe is $20/ft and moorings are $800/yr. I also like the idea about being able to get to the bay. Since I sail the South Puget Sound right now I think this would be fun. One question is the availablity of slips? I will email you Steve....
