So I've decided that after nearly breaking my neck twice today whilst washing my boat that it's clearly time I re-did the non skid

My question is, can I paint straight over the factory stuff and if so what do people recommend ?

I jest redone my deck last summer with Kiwi Grip. I sanded the old off and applied a new coat. You have around a 15-20 min time frame to pull your tape off the edges. If you don't it will chip the edges and you will have to go back and fix the area. Very easy to work with!! You will love the new look of your deck.

Also did kiwi grip. There are some great how to videos online. We just acid washed the deck before doing the kiwi. A notched throw away trowel and ladle are the way to go, only needed one roller for the entire boat. I think there is an issue with tinting it due to a change in the EPA regs. We did stock white so not a concern.

Gary, I checked out your blog posts regarding Kiwi grip. Nice job. Did you have to start from the wood core with new fiberglas on your Cat '30 decks, or did you put kiwi over the existing knobby gelcoat? (I'm particularly interested in the cabin top, not the cockpit sole.)

The only recoring I did was on the cockpit floor as it was really rotten and spongy. I now have a much deeper appreciation for folks who do fiberglass for a living.

On the cabin top we just cleaned well and put the white on over the factory blue gelcoat.

Using the cheap spreader linked here we found you can manitulate the thickness of the coating before hitting it with the goopy roller. We did it pretty thick (1/8" notch) on most surfaces and thinner on the sea hood just to see how it worked out. We were very pleased even with the thin coat.

I used INTINTERDECK-GRY and it is very close to the original color. It has a little roughness for the non skid but looks like the original paint. I highly recommend this product.

Impressive work. And thanks for the link to the notched tool. So did the blue gelcoat still have some old nonskid on it after you cleaned it, and you applied the kiwi grip over that? Sorry for the rookie questions. I'm contemplating doing this on my own on Pelican. Her (original?) nonskid has started to wear away in places. I saw you had Lori Bell's mast unstepped when you did yours. Probably helped make the area around the step easier to cover. (I can see a number of test applications over some scrap plywood in my future.)

Thanks. Indeed a project.

The deck had the factory molded in non skid pattern with the light blue gelcoat. There was no real nonskid but the mold pattern. The side decks near the cockpit were so worn that the blue and the pattern were nor even there anymore. Should have taken more before photos.

Kiwi Grip is pretty good at covering up a number of sins as I used it to cover up the mildly sloppy seam I left after doing the cockpit floor. It should cover the older non skid well.

One thing is do not upply it right before sundown, we did and it the next morning it was still wet to the touch. It can sets up pretty quick in the Florida sun so we found the overnight wet surprising.

Maybe that's what I'm looking at - the factory molding instead of nonskid that's wearing away. It's a shade darker than the smooth gelcoat, so I assumed it had some nonskid on it. Either way, it's beginning to look a bit ragged in places. Thanks for the tip about not applying it too late in the day. I'm over in the Tampa area and I wouldn't have thought it might not dry.
