The black anodized toe rail on my 1976 Hunter 27 is now a dirty grey. Has anyone come across a method or product that will restore the original black finish?

Black toe rails need help!!

Me too!! The Admiral has offered to do the work (interpretation: she really hates the way it looks.) but we don't know what to use to do the job. I have searched the archives, and followed up on one suggestion about a coating offered in auto stores for the backs of mirrors, and other black aluminum pieces. The local auto chain outlet was sure that they had no such product - it's all plastic these days. David Lady Lillie '77 h27

Look at the Archives

This topic was actually addressed just a few months ago and is in the archives. The advice was either acetone or Penetrol (not sure what that is or where you get it). I pasted the link to the article below. Hopefully, it will take you there. If not, so a search for "toe rail." I think the discussion was in December of last year, but I wouldn't swear to it. Good luck. Tom FitzGibbon

Need to blacken bare metal

Acetone and Penetrol were recommended for cleaning in the different archived threads. I don't know about Doug, but after we get it clean, we do have a number of worn or gouged places that need to be blackened - that's the solution we can't find! David

"Black hardcoat" finish

The TACO Metals service rep at DIY Marine 1 800 653 8567 said that this coating is paint - a "black hardcoat" he called it. He had no suggested paint, but suggested we just try to match what we have. My plan is to clean and then try to touch up - maybe with an automative tough-up paint. David
