Reneault diesel

I have owned a 1979 with the 8 hp Reneault for about 10 years now and other than parts, has been a pretty good little engine. Had to fab a new exhaust manifold (with water fitting) about 8 years ago and have had problems with sea water filling the head in heavy following seas but under normal circumstances, it is fine. The head comes off easily to get the water back out. Made a big wad of duct tape to stuff in the outlet. It is underpowered in higher winds and makes a racket when below. It all depends on how much you use your engine. It is fine for a sailor but not near as good if you spend much time motoring. And not the world's best in reverse! For a lake boat, it would be fine. BTW, mine is for sale.

Parts are a problem

I have a friend who owns a 27 with a Renault. On her first outing, she had a problem in reverse and lost propulsion. Needed a part replaced (don't remember what). She searched everywhere - even in France - without success and finally had the part fabricated by a local marine engineering shop. She was without her boat for most of her first season. The boat is now for sale. Personally, I'd keep looking for a vessel with a more common engine. John s/v Perennial Saginaw Bay
