When I bought my boat it wasn't named, at least it isn't painted on her anyway so Gilly Mac it became. I am looking to buy a larger boat in the near future and as I plan on buying a used boat it will more likely then not be named. I have always been told that it is bad luck to rename a boat that is already sporting a name. Is there an appropriate method or tradition on how to rename your boat? By the way, I am never opposed to a tradition that calls for single malt scotch.

Renaming Ceremony . . .

Here it is - from Bluewater Sailing in Marina Del Rey California - a renaming ceremony! Sounds like the Single Malt needs to be supplemented (but not ignored) by a generous quantity of Red Wine and other substances! The link to the ceremony is about half way down the page linked below.

Drink the drink & keep the old name too

I have read all the renaming stories. I would only rename if it had a sorry name. or the name of a person I did not like. Your boat must have had a name unless it is brand new. If you have to rename, pick a name that everyone will love. If you do not rename, then drink all the whisky , wine, beer etc that the ceremony calls for and you should be safe

Ceremony Works

I think that it really works! We did it and our boat is still floating and no one has died aboard. Actually I say this with "tongue-in-cheek". My wife is seriously supersticious and I am sure that she believes we would have perished at sea long ago had we ignored the ritual. She may be correct! At any rate it is cheap insurance and a great reason to pop some champaign.

My favorite part of the Ceremony. . .

"If the boat is a powerboat [perish the thought], you may have bad luck until the boat has been run aground three times" That (other than the libations) was my favorite part of the Blue Water ceremony! I think they accidently left out a part about the enjoyment of a pretty lady!!! Me Admiral will suffice - besides it keeps me from being court martialed and keel hauled! She did say I could'nt buy the small boat to rename - something about bigger is better. . . OldCat P.S. How many times does a Jet Ski have to run aground before bad luck is satisfied?

"P.S. How many times does a Jet Ski have to run aground before bad luck is satisfied?" once is enough so long as it's permanant! ken

When I got mine,

I did the ceremony, except for one part. Instead of breaking the bottle of champagne over the bow, I drank it! I figured Neptune wouldnt be to hard on me!

Sailors are so Superstitious

We never did the ceremony, I was very nervous for the first season, but we had a great year. Knock on fiberglass, we hope to have a good year again. Make sure you place a coin under your mast step, and never start a cruise on a Friday.

Renaming Boat

Just look up on the internet....type in....renameing boats. There will be lots of sites with info. on renameing ceremonies. Most will be websites from the folks that sell the lettering and logo decals to put on the hull. Renameing and its associated ceremonies is a practice that goes back at least a few thousand years. After the battle, does anyone doubt the the winner didnt keep the losers boat? Boats were so valuable especially way back when. Conquering armies/navies even raised sunk boats and repaired them. And yes, they renamed them. Thus the ceremony. Modern day ceremonies call for Champagne, which did not exist at the time these ceremonies were first instituted. Most commonly was a good wine and good ale. Ripple and Mad dog are not recommended (LOL) Drink and be merry
