Renaming the boat

I am planning on renaming my boat from what the PO had it named. How do I go about removing the painted on letters? How do I prep the surface for the new name? Do I then wax over the whole thing? Thanks, Robbin the future "Glissade en l' aire" (glide in the air)

Oven cleaner

I am so not kidding. Many people I know have used oven cleaner with great success. Spray it on, let it sit & use very very fine wet dry sandpaper to get the residual off. Be sure to keep the paper wet at all times. And when I say fine I mean the absolute highest grit paper you can find. I used this process on my parents boat - though used more elbow grease & less cleaner - & it looks pretty good. The shadow of the old painted name is still slightly visible underneath the new vinyl letters but it's fading. And be sure to use John Vigor's Interdenominational Renaming Ceremony (see link) - you don't want Neptune's wrath upon your head! :) LaDonna

Thanks for the info, but breaking a bottle...

across the bow doesn't sound like a good idea as far as the gelcoat goes. How else is this done so the boat doesn't suffer undo damage? Anyone? I'll be buying oven cleaner real soon!

No need to break bottles...

The "related link" I've included with this post will take you to a site that gives a detailed explanation of the traditional boat renaming ceremony. It doesn't involve breaking a bottle across the bow, but it does involve throwing an awful lot of bubbly into the water. Regardless of how you maintain the gelcoat, you'd better be sure to make a proper offering to the gods of the four winds. That is, of course, if you're superstitious about these things... but even if you're not, why take a chance?

You can just pour/spray it

I checked the article cuz I didn't think breaking the bottle was 'required'. It says you can just shake the bubbly over the bow. But make sure it's decent stuff! LaDonna
