removing wood

I'd like to remove the teak from my cabin top for refinishing this year. Can I do this from the outside or will I need to get under the liner? I noticed the grab rail is screwed from the outside but I don't know if there are bolts inside. The wood along the sliding hatch has wooden plugs over the countersunk screws so I'm not sure what's under there. Am I on the right track or should I mask and do the job on the boat? Thanks in advance for your advice.

No nuts.

My 89 H23 used all wood screws on all the teak (inside and out). Although, none of my exterior screw holes were counter sunk and plugged. The hand rails and top hatch slides were screwed from the outside into fiberglass. The hatch board slides were screwed from the inside through the fiberglass. I had to remove interior trim to access all the screws. I felt is was worth while to remove the screws and really clean up the teak. I finished the pieces with Cetol and re-sealed the screw holes with Lifecalk. Mike Debbia II, '89 N31

Right on

You're absolutely right to remove the teak. Slightest sanding of the gelcoat will mar it. Beware Cetol, which I think looks like baby poop

removing teak

Removing teak is the only way to do it , when I do mine, before replacing the teak , you may want to over drill the holes and fill with epoxy , then drill the epoxy to the size of the screws, this helps prevent moisture getting in to the fibreglass, lots of info in the archives on this, it is a small job and pays big dividends if you plan on keeping the boat, other wise you risk getting a rotten core , Mike Bacome
