I getting ready to remove the waterline stripe and the pinstripe along the top of the hull. Does anyone have a good suggestion on what to use to make this job easier? Thanks.

Hi Rick,
I found a paint remover that does not harm gel coat, one with no methylene chloride. It was from a local hardware store.
West Marine is one source, with their BACK TO NATURE Marine Paint Remover. These types of strippers are not as effective as the nasty ones and may require more than one application.

Peter, thanks for the suggestion. Before seeing your post, I googled pinstripe removal and found what is called a smart eraser pad on Amazon.com. It's made by Astro Pneumatic Tool Co and is $13.00. 3M makes one also but it's twice as much money. It had all kinds of great reviews so I bought a couple. I received them on Friday and I spent about 10 minutes with it Saturday evening. It's pretty amazing. You put it in your drill and spin it against the surface. I was able to remove about 10 feet of the pinstripe even though it sets down in the grove and it didn't damage the gelcoat at all. I think it will take one wheel for each side, but it comes off so easy it will be worth it. Anyone else wanting to remove the pinstripe or watermark line, you might want to check this out.

I have a daughter who lettered boat names to pay her way through college while I was off sailing:) She use oven off to remove old letters for renaming. She says that is what all sign painters use. it won't hurt the glass and it's cheap. Doug On Sun, 11 Aug 2013 23:58:14 -0000

Sorry I am late with this. If the stripe is painted with anything except marine enamel like easy poxy or something like that it may not work. Doug

I find the soda plasting to be very good paint removing method. I plasted my hole bottom of the boat to get rid of a antifouling and it left the gelcoat in very good shape. One can plast just a small area also, it is very gentle way to remove paint. You can see the result by watching my boat pictures in my album.

One must have of soda plaster gun, and such kind of pressured air pump, which have moisture removing in it, so that incoming air is without moisture, and there must be 8 bar and atleast 100 liter / minute of incoming air.

Hi Rick,
I assumed it was a painted strip. Was yours vinyl? That looks like an interesting tool ... have to get one of those!

Peter,
Yes, both the pinstripe and waterline stripe are vinyl. It would have been easier if they were paint because I could have just sanded them off, being that I have to sand the hull to paint it. The wheels are great for removing any adhesive without damaging the surface. And it's super quick.

Must be great to be retired and complete the rebuild so quickly. What link are you using for your pictures? I take it there will also be plenty of pictures of the launch? I should have mine back in the water before the end of the year.
