I plan to remove the steering pedestal and guages after the boat is hauled in the next few weeks and refinish the datamarine nav pods along with the black anodized pedestal. New paint over the worn off anodizing. Of course I plan to epoxy the raw edges of the cockpit floor cutout to seal it while it's off. I just make work for myself! If I can seal up an area of core before it gets wet, then that's one extra thing I don't have to worry about in the future. Has anyone removed the pedestal??

CALYPSO.......i am about to do the same thing to my s2 9.2a ...in about a week ......i have taken one out of a almand 35 back in july ...it had the same type of controll cables and rudder wheel that is on my s2....only dif i have found so far is that the almand 35 had throttle and shift controls on the pedestial.....there are two wire ropes going to the tiller wheel attached with long eye bolts at the wheel on the rudder post... when removeing them be sure to mark the starboard and port so not to get them mixed up on the reinstall ....there is also an electric wire in the edison pedistal to feed the compass light ......when removeing the pedistal there are 4 - 3/8" bolts that hold the pedistal to cockpit sole that have to be removed as well...it is not nesassary to remove the compass from the pedistal ......but if you do make very sure that you mark it in relation to its direction on the post very accurately .....other wise you will have to recalibrate it to your boat when installing it back .....i dont envey you on the 9.2c as i suspect it will be very tight under there as opposed to the 9.2a....hoped this is of some help ...and good luck

Thanks, my controls are on the pedestal as are my guages. I can label and disconnect the wires, my problem is the chain that goes over the gear on the steering shaft. I think where it joins to the wire I can pull a clevis and cotter pin. I'd rather not disassemble the whole thing at the marina. I can then play with it all winter in the comfort of my home! Thanks for the help!

you will have to take the cables /wire rope off the big wheel that is mounted on the rudder shaft and take them with you ......if you are takeing the pedestl home to play with it make you a wood box base to mount it on ....about 16" sq x 5" high with a 4" hole in the center ...that will let you stand it up at home with out kinking any of your control cables or wire

good luck

Well I pulled the pedestal. I removed the compass and pulled all the guage wires through. I ended up removing one of the wires from the quadrant to loosen the chain. Then I pulled it up from the steering shaft, cut the heatshrink and removed a cotter pin where the cable joins the chain. Base bolts are aluminum and came out easy. Pedestal was secured with black silicone that did not want to give way but yeilded under the cutting action of a putty knife. Now it's home to get new black imron. In the meantime, I siliconed a piece of plexiglass in place of the pedestal to seal out any water. Before it goes back on, I'll seal the edges of the boat's core with epoxy.

You should consider replacing the steering cables since you have done half the work already. Edson recommends fairly frequent replacement and most people never replace them. If you do replace them keep an eye on tension the first season, as the cable and chain will stretch a little.
