Removing the furthing sail

In the process of winterizing our boat (this is the first time for us, since we boat the 212 this past April), we're trying to take down the furthing sail, but we can't figure out how to lower it (we had help setting it up) w/o lowering the mast. We're hoping we won't have to do that. Any ideas?

I assume you mean furling sail?

You will not need to take down the mast. Make sure its calm out since the sail will need to be unfurled. First remove the jib sheets. Removing the sail will depend on what type of furler you have. If it's a type with its own internal halyard (like a CDI), you will first need to tie a messenger line to the end of the halyard. The messenger line should be at least as long as the luff track. Next, untie the line securing the tack and raise the sail just high enough to start the luff rope out of the sail track feed slot. Now it should be just a matter of pulling down and removing. Untie the halyard from the head of the sail and secure. Secure the messenger line since it will be needed to re-install the sail. Flake and roll the sail. Store in a cool, dry location. The procedure is essentially the same for furlers that use an external halyard except that it may not be necessary to use a messenger line. Hope this helps. Mark Kissel Kittiwake/98H240

Furling

Your boat does not have a standard furling system that will enable you to drop the sail. The sail on the 212 is for simpler terms a part of the furling system and the mast must come down. Did you get the mast raise system with your boat. If not, get it. Crazy Dave
