Hunter 33 Port Credit Lake Ontario
We are in the process of buying a 2006 Hunter 33 that is located in Annapolis. Our home port is Port Credit, close to Toronto on Lake Ontario.

The transport company has asked us to remove the arch before they can ship the boat. We'll also need to remove the spreaders and rigging from the B&R mast and get it and the arch wrapped and ready.

I am hoping that someone has experience in removing and re-installing that arch and mast spreaders will be able to give me some pointers.

Any advice will be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Tony Bertram

Talk to Hunter Marine or one of their authorized dealers about transporting the boats?

It is true. You cannot truck a Hunter with the arch. Used to help our marina get boats to the Cleveland boat show in January. All the arches came off, truck fifty miles to IX Center, put them all back on. Not hard, just time consuming. One person up top with socket and ratchet, one below with wrench. Have to keep all bolts loose until are are started. Fortunately only stepped one mast of the eight or ten boat.

Funny, we had a 2005 H33 trucked from Port Credit to Georgian Bay, but several years ago.

I had Angus Yachts ( Hunter dealer before True North ) not only take take the arch down and secure and prep for shipping, and also wrap the mast and load on the truck for shippping. In hindsight, should have bought the H33 for sale in Midland, but hindisight is always 20/20.

Surprised you didn't buy one in this area. There have been a few available.

It can be done, there are 3-4 large philips head bolts on the deck of the arch and nuts which can be reached through the access plate in the header in the aft cabin starboard side, access plate in the vertical divider to the holding tank and diesel tank and through the port locker in the cockpit.

It will take at least 2 ( 3 even better ) to unbolt and lay down ( it's very heavy ), get padded and secured to transport.

As far as the mast, unbolt, wrap and secure.... just remember how it all came apart.

Removing and installing the arch is a three person job. It's heavy. There are twelve bolts. Takes about thirty to 45 minutes to remove. Most of the nuts are accessible though the aft cabin, some under the cockpit sitting. Make sure 4200 sealant is used when reinstalling. Had to remove the arch on mine to transport from e US to Canada.

I highly recommend Annapolis Boat Service for this work, 410-280-2935. They commission new Hunters sold in Annapolis, including my H41 in 2005 (but they are not a Hunter dealer). Fantastic staff and they know exactly what they are doing with arches and masts on Hunters. Located at Bert Jabins Yacht Yard. Link at http://www.annapolisboatservice.com/about.html

Hey Tony,

There is an electrical plug connection inside the access panel in the aft cabin starboard side. The forward starboard arch bolts are accessible from there also. The aft starboard arch bolts may be accessible from the propane locker but I think that you will have to crawl in to the area aft of the aft cabin, accessible through the rear access panel, and above the waste tank. The port arch bolts are accessible from the lockers on the port side.

I would take the advise from Brian and have someone remove the arch for you. It needs to be well wrapped and set down in the cockpit for transportation. Mark the rigging and spreaders with red and green tape. Don't disassemble the rigging from the spreader tips. Just remove the tips and coil the rigging together.

When it's here I will help you put it together.

Is it a done deal yet?

Tbert did this last spring and it was not a problem. As stated there is an electrical connection on the starboard side you can get to from the aft cabin. There is a opening there with a cover you will need to remove. The most difficult part that we came across was removing the back rails from the pulpit seats. Ours were very tight into the receivers on the arch. We ended up using a rubber mallet to knock them out.

We wrapped ours with insulation that is used between the sole plate and the house framing then wrapped it with plastic wrap to hold the insulation on.

Please make sure that the arch is tied off to the crane before completely unbolting it. It will have a tendency to overbalance forward if all the bolts are removed.

FYI - Also you will need to remove the grab rail above the binnacle and lay it down. It is to high for shipping. We also wrapped this with insulation and secured it to the binnacle.

Good luck!

Hey Jake,

I've contacted Annapolis boat service as suggested, just waiting to hear back.

The deal is signed, just waiting on the survey results to finalize it. Closing date is Feb 15th. If all goes well she should be in Port Credit by end of March/begining of April

I really appreciate the offer to help. I'll buy the beers!

Cheers,
Tony

Let me know as well. I'm only an hour from PC, which is nothing, do it quite often. More than willing to lend a hand if I can.

Never use 5200 on attachement of the arch. Never used 4200 on installation of the arches. I used the West Marine silicon which in fact is manufacturer by Silaflex. FYI
