I have an O'Day 27 that suffered minor damage in a recent storm. My roller furler is beyond repair. I have decided to go back to hank-on. Does anyone have experience in removing the aluminum vane from the forestay? Short-cuts etc. And how to best refit the forestay?

Thanks for any advice!

Best thing to do would be to determine the manufacturer then Google it and you should run into a site where they are sold that shows how they go together.
Some slide together others have screws and joiners and one I know is continuous plastic

tie off the jib halyard to the bow cleat or anchor roller. (tight) Loosen a back stay (optional), remove sail see first if the furler will lift. some are split spools, some lift (like CDI) If your doing it over water, use a box cut out and taped around the spool so you don't loose things. (tools, screws, toggles etc) eventually you will find the forestay turnbuckle. if stilll under tension loosen it (or backstay) remove cotter pin from toggle, pull pin.take the turnbuckle body off the stay. Most likely the whole thing will slide down and off the forestay. Disassemble the foils as they come down the wire. The big caution is to not let the mast fall back. Most furlers do not change the forestay length and you can go right back to hank on,
