Removing/replacing manual bilge pump

The original manual bilge pump on my 1979 O'Day 28 is not drawing. It's probably due to a combination of its age, and my negligence in not using it after installing an additional electric pump.
The only way I can imagine removing the pump is by persuading a very small person to crawl through the lazarette into the transom space to hold and collect the nuts and pump while I back off the screws from the cockpit.
Any other ideas/experience in this matter?

I just did this project. There are no nuts on the back, the pump is threaded. Undo the nuts and the pump falls into the back of the crawlspace in the transom. If you have the dreaded "kempax" pump you will find that parts are almost non-existant. H-R parts in sweden have them, but the shipping is unbelievable. Johnson pumps makes the same exact pump, but they are on backorder and not available until August 15th. I emailed WM to see if they can get it for me, and they can when it's available for $171.28 plus shipping. So I just went out and bought a tire tube, draped it over the case and made my own "diaphram". It works beautifully and cost me $12 bucks. I was able to wrap myself around the radial steering and hold the pump while my sailing buddies screwed the thing back in. Not fun but not hard. Hope this helps some.....
